Marburg (dpa) - The mining, chemical and energy industrial union (IG BCE) has demonstrated against possible layoffs and collective bargaining at the Marburg pharmaceutical site.

The aim is to draw attention to current, general developments, said a union spokeswoman for the protest in the central Hessian city on Thursday.

The police counted about 100 participants at the beginning of the action.

Many companies at the site have reported "whopping profits" for years, the union had previously announced.

"Regardless of this, the employees are threatened with dismissals and spin-offs."

According to the spokeswoman, one reason for the demonstration was the situation at CSL Behring in Marburg.

According to the company, it is planning “global and local changes” to the organizational structure, which will also have an impact on employees in Germany: “We are currently assuming that these changes will result in jobs being cut in Germany, including in the I&T area”, said it.

"We understand that the changes that CSL is making worldwide and here in Marburg trigger fears and insecurities among our employees," said Michael Schröder, managing director and site manager of CSL Behring in Marburg, according to the announcement.

We are currently in dialogue with the works council for the next steps.

Several companies with a total of around 6500 employees are based at the Marburg pharmaceutical site called “Behringwerke”.

The industrial park recently gained national recognition because a few months ago the Mainz-based company Biontech took over a plant for the production of corona vaccines.
