Cologne (dpa) - Friedhelm Funkel has denied a media report that he is a coaching candidate for the Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln, which is threatened with relegation.

“This is all bullshit.

I have no contact at all with 1. FC Köln, ”said the 67-year-old soccer teacher on Thursday at skysport.de about speculation that he would be available as a successor in the event of FC separation from Markus Gisdol.

After the last six games without a win and the fall to 16th place in the table, Gisdol has to fear for his job in Cologne.

After separating from Fortuna Düsseldorf at the end of January 2020, Funkel actually retired as a coach, but could now imagine returning to the sidelines.

“Because of the pandemic, my situation changed after I said I no longer do a coach.

Normally I would have been on vacation somewhere with my wife or already a couple of times on vacation, but none of that is possible, ”explained Funkel.

Nevertheless, a comeback in Cologne is not an option: "If a club asks me, I listen to it, but I have zero contact with 1. FC Köln."
