Mainz (dpa / lrs) - After the Easter break, children and young people should test themselves for corona infections at school once a week - but the planned procedure has met criticism from the philologists' association.

"It does not make sense at all why self-tests are not carried out at home in the family's protected room when, according to the Ministry of Education, they should only take place on a voluntary basis anyway," said the state chairman of the Association of Teachers at High Schools, Cornelia Schwartz, on Thursday.

"By testing in the classroom, we put children and young people into situations that can lead to unnecessary crises and conflicts in the relevant learning group," criticized Schwartz.

After all, everyone saw when a test was positive.

Self-tests must therefore be carried out either in the family or under the guidance of medically trained staff outside of the schools.

Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) named three reasons on Wednesday why the self-tests should take place at school and not at home.

This is the best way to teach children and young people how to carry out this test correctly.

"On the other hand, it is important to us to get an overview of how high the participation rate is."

And finally, this ensures that positive cases are also reported.

If the test is positive, everything should be done to deal sensitively with it in the learning group and to avoid stigmatization.
