Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In Baden-Württemberg, numerous cities and municipalities want to take part in the Earth Hour light-off campaign on Saturday.

As a spokesman for the environmental foundation informed the dpa, the lights for climate protection should go out in more than 140 southwestern municipalities.

These include large municipalities, such as the state capital Stuttgart or Mannheim and Freiburg, as well as many smaller municipalities in various districts.

With the Earth Hour campaign, the environmental foundation WWF wants to draw attention to the threats posed by climate change on Saturday evening.

Around the globe, the lights are to be switched off for one hour at 8.30 p.m.

According to the foundation, 551 cities and municipalities throughout Germany have announced their participation.

Even at famous sights, such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Cologne Cathedral and the Brandenburg Gate, it should be dark for an hour on Saturday.

A good six months before the federal election and the upcoming state elections, the action should also be understood as a demand on politics, said a WWF spokesman in Berlin.

«No party can ignore climate protection in the super election year.

In times of the corona pandemic, the WWF recommends spending Earth Hour at home and following the action on social networks.

The idea for Earth Hour first came up 14 years ago in Australia.
