The assassination and killing operations return to the city of Benghazi (eastern Libya) after the killing of the commander of operations in the Thunderbolt forces, Mahmoud Al-Warfali, known as the "execution officer" in the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar. Observers expect that the assassination file will remain ambiguous with the multiplicity of speculations about who is behind him.

Al-Werfalli was killed in Benghazi, near the Arab Medical University, in broad daylight, in the same way that he had killed his opponents since Haftar launched Operation Dignity in 2014.

Haftar had previously granted him exceptional promotions, the last of which was in 2019, and the two men also appeared in official meetings before they disagreed, and Haftar assigns the task of securing Benghazi to his sons.

The relationship between Al-Werfalli and Haftar has worsened since the latter's attempt to arrest Al-Werfalli and interrogate him after the International Criminal Court pressed for his extradition.

Because of accusations of war crimes, crimes against humanity and premeditated murder outside the authority of the law.

Al-Werfalli appeared a few days ago in a video taken by one of his companions, recording the names of Haftar's militia, promising to give each of them a sum of money as compensation for the wounded, after accusing the leadership of neglecting these groups and not granting them their right, in a scene described as the emergence of hostility between Haftar and Al-Wafli.

Al-Werfalli also appeared in another video a few days ago, attacking a car dealership in the city of Benghazi, while vandalizing it and destroying its contents, threatening to kill the owner of the company.

The series of killings is repeated and attributed to an unknown killer in a city that witnessed executions, liquidations, torture, and massacres of civilians, as well as the killing of officials and human rights defenders, including Parliament Representative Siham Sergewa and human rights activist Hanan al-Barasi.

Different ways and one killer

A military source in the city of Benghazi considered that the accused in all the crimes committed in the city was the one who liquidated Al-Werfalli, as the method of killing differed only, according to his description.

The source, a former high-ranking official, said in an interview with Al-Jazeera Net, "Now either the gangs of Al-Werfalli flee, leave their weapons, or enter into open war, and the assassinations return to Benghazi, because the crimes committed since 2012 have witnesses, and some officials are involved in these operations." .

The source indicated that the file of Al-Werfalli will be closed permanently and the crime will be recorded against an unknown person, based on higher orders from the Al Rajma leadership, which will accuse anyone trying to move the case with labor and treason, as happened in similar crimes, according to him.

Haftar and his sons

A member of the Supreme Council of State, Balqasem Debar, considered that the first beneficiary of ending the Al-Werfalli file is Haftar and his children, who fear that the arrest of Al-Werfalli will lead to their subsequent prosecution with international arrest warrants.

Debarz, who is the head of the Security Committee of the Supreme Council of State, told Al-Jazeera Net that most of the people who carried out the killing are regional state intelligence by proxy;

Because they want to close the file of an international criminal with local and international links.

Dabars stated that the motives for killing Al-Werfalli are multiple, the most dangerous of which is the international part represented by the capitals of the countries supporting Haftar, as they are driving Al-Rajma’s leadership and know the dimensions of Al-Werfalli’s arrest, according to his opinion.

Dabars ruled out the existence of a real move by the Al-Werfalli tribe to demand the disclosure of the circumstances of his killing, given the current circumstances, in addition to the fact that the policy of direct killing against those speaking about the leadership of Al-Rajma is sufficient reason to fear tribal officials.

Debars called on the national unity government to reveal the circumstances of the case, so that all Libyans would know who was carrying out the liquidation operations, which Al-Werfalli was one of its tools in Benghazi, according to him.

Many beneficiaries

International law professor Sami Al-Atrash believes that Al-Rajma leadership is responsible for the liquidation of Al-Werfalli

"Because it wants to liquidate everyone who has a relationship with her past related to her orders of executions, liquidation and torture, as Al-Werfalli is considered one of her tools in these criminal operations."

Al-Atrash added to Al-Jazeera Net, "Al-Werfalli said more than once, threatening that if he was arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court, he would disclose all the information and orders that he was assigned to by the leadership of Haftar to kill the opponents."

Al-Atrash considered that the beneficiaries of the killing of Al-Werfalli were many, among them Haftar, who began cleaning the square in front of him some time ago.

To polish his "distorted image" in front of the Libyans and the international community "who are fed up with his criminal actions."

Al-Atrash expected that the reason for the killing of Al-Werfalli was tribal, especially after the loudness of the voice in the Eastern Region was the necessity to deport those who terrorize citizens, commit crimes against civilians, and attack public state institutions and citizens' private property.
