Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Rhineland-Palatinate is increasingly relying on locations in the forest when expanding wind energy.

Of the plants put into operation last year, 58 percent were in forest areas, as the Ministry of the Environment announced on Thursday.

This makes Rhineland-Palatinate the state with the most wind turbines in the forest.

Every fourth wind turbine in the country turns in the forest.

"The energy transition protects our forests in the long term, since renewable energies do not emit any climate-damaging CO2 when they are generated," said Environment Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens).

That is why it is important to build more wind turbines in the forest as well.

Wind energy in the forest has the advantage that the locations are often far away from residential areas and on areas where the wind is particularly strong.

"We want to continue to use this in a sensible and environmentally friendly way," declared the minister.

According to the ministry, 84 percent of the wind turbines installed in the forest are on communal land.

This means an important source of income for the communities - "they enable, for example, the financing of a daycare center or a new playground".
