Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg's Minister of Education Britta Ernst (SPD) defended short-term decisions about opening schools during the corona pandemic.

"In the pandemic, quick decisions are sometimes necessary," she emphasized on Thursday in the state parliament.

This also applies to her decision on Sunday to suspend the students' obligation to attend classroom teaching until the Easter break.

The background to this is that many parents were concerned about the increasing number of infections, the minister said.

"We accept that parents make their own risk assessment."

At the same time, she explained that the schools should open again with alternating classes after Easter.

Teachers 'and parents' associations had massively criticized the decision late on Sunday afternoon, and some calls for resignation were also loud.

The AfD parliamentary group called for the minister's dismissal with a motion in the plenary debate.

However, this was rejected by the state parliament with a large majority.

The opposition left faction moved away from the education minister in the state parliament debate.

Their education policy spokeswoman Kathrin Dannenberg referred to clear criticism from associations and committees of Ernst's management style and of “the inconsistent implementation of health protection measures”.

"Minister, you drove over and around some stop signs," said Dannenberg.

"You should take this seriously, otherwise your driver's license will actually be taken away."
