Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The number of new corona infections in Brandenburg has risen as sharply as it did last in January of this year.

The health authorities reported 778 new cases within one day, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

There were 650 new infections on Wednesday, 489 a week ago. The last time there were similar high numbers were around two months ago: On January 23, the number of new infections increased by 724, on January 21 by more than 1000. Ten people died in the Related to a Covid-19 disease, the day before there were eleven.

In more counties than before, stricter corona restrictions are in effect again.

According to the figures from Thursday, the Potsdam-Mittelmark district had a value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days of over 100 for the third day in a row. This means that the latest easing in seven districts and one city is being reversed: in Elbe-Elster, Oberspreewald -Lausitz, Oberhavel, Oder-Spree, Teltow-Fläming, Spree-Neisse, Potsdam-Mittelmark and the city of Cottbus.

According to the current rules, only one household and one other person are allowed to meet there, shops and museums are no longer allowed to open for date purchases, with the exception of supermarkets and other shops for daily needs.

The cabinet will discuss possible further steps on Friday.

The main focus of the infections remains the Elbe-Elster district with a 7-day incidence of 257. The value has been rising for several days.

It is followed by the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district with a value of over 200 as well. Nationwide, the 7-day incidence increased from around 119 to around 129.
