Haselünne (dpa) - The several-month closure of the catering trade in 2020 has left its mark on the Berentzen beverage group.

According to preliminary figures, group sales fell by 7.7 percent to 154.6 million euros last year, announced the Berentzen Gruppe AG, based in Haselünne in Emsland, on Thursday.

"We consider this to be almost moderate due to the pandemic," said the board of the Berentzen Group, Oliver Schwegmann, on Thursday.

Consolidated earnings before interest and taxes fell significantly from EUR 9.8 million to EUR 5.2 million.

The number of employees increased slightly, from 498 in 2019 to 507.

Above all, the license business with the soft drink brand Sinalco has shrunk sharply.

"We mainly sell containers in the catering trade, and business here has collapsed by over 80 percent," said Schwegmann.

The lack of major celebrations and festivals made itself felt here.

The alcohol-free own brands, on the other hand, had increased sales and sales.

The branded spirits business has also suffered above average, said Schwegmann.

These products need a sociable occasion, and this broke away in the pandemic year 2020.

The fresh juice systems segment is most severely affected by the pandemic.

Here, sales in the hotel and catering industry almost completely came to a standstill, and demand from the food retail sector fell noticeably.

However, he expects strong catch-up effects as soon as the corona-related restrictions are over, said Schwegmann.
