Bitterfeld-Wolfen (dpa / sa) - A mobile high-tech container for the transport and storage of corona vaccines has been presented in Bitterfeld-Wolfen.

The Mecotec Group from Bitterfeld-Wolfen developed it, the company and the Ministry of Economics announced on Thursday.

Around half a million vaccine doses could be transported and stored in the container at minus 20 to minus 80 degrees Celsius.

For 24 hours, the container gets by without an external power source or refueling the integrated diesel generator.

The first container should be delivered to the Philippines in April.

Various corona vaccines, such as those from Biontech and Pfizer, would have to be frozen for transport and storage.

The managing director of the Mecotec Group, Enrico Klauer, said that the pandemic will only be combated when all people worldwide have received a vaccination against the corona virus.

“It is therefore important that we take a look at the countries that are still at the beginning of the vaccination campaigns and, due to their geographical location and climatic conditions, are facing completely different challenges than are the case here in Germany.

The Philippines are an example of such a country: Its around 100 million inhabitants are spread across almost 900 inhabited islands.

Solutions for the storage and distribution of the corona vaccines are in demand there.

Further orders are expected from Southeast Asia in particular.

The Mecotec Group, founded in 2000 and based in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, is reportedly an industrial refrigeration specialist and world market leader in electrical cold chambers for the fields of medicine, sport and wellness.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has funded the group with more than 460,000 euros in recent years.
