A 400-meter-long and 220,000-tonne container ship got stuck on Tuesday morning at the southern end of the important transport route between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

At lunchtime on Wednesday, those responsible for the port stated that traffic is expected to resume shortly and that the container vessel is about to be moved from its position diagonally across the canal.

The shipping company Evergreen Marine Corp tells AFP that the reason for the grounding of container vessels is strong gusts of wind.

According to Bloomberg, a queue was formed with ships waiting to pass through the canal.

An older and usually unused part of the canal was opened up for other ships to pass, writes TT.

The Panama-flagged ship holds close to 20,000 containers and is on its way to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
