Essen (dpa) - The energy group RWE has finally launched a multi-billion dollar wind power project off the British North Sea coast.

The group announced on Wednesday that the final investment decision had been made for the Sofia wind farm, the world's largest RWE project at sea.

A total investment of around 3 billion British pounds (around 3.48 billion euros) is estimated.

RWE expects the wind farm to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Sofia will be built on Dogger Bank, 195 km off the north-east coast of Great Britain.

The wind farm will have an output of 1.4 gigawatts and will be able to cover the annual electricity needs of over 1.2 million British households.
