Kiel (AP) - Record champions THW Kiel has taken the lead in the handball Bundesliga.

The zebras won their home game against SC DHfK Leipzig on Wednesday with 31:21 (17:14).

Three days before the 104th Schleswig-Holstein derby, THW overtook north rivals SG Flensburg-Handewitt (32: 4) with 33: 3 points.

The most successful throwers from Kiel were Domagoj Duvnjak and Patrick Wiencek with five hits each, Luca Witzke scored six times for the Saxons.

The Leipzigers, who had already arrived weakly, had to accept the next setback in the third minute of the game.

After a collision with Kiel's Wiencek, international Philipp Weber limped off the field with a knee injury.

Thanks to a strong performance by goalkeeper Joel Birlehm, the guests also put away the temporary failure of Weber substitute Niclas Pieczkowski and kept the gap within limits.

Immediately after the break, Lukas Binder shortened to 15:17.

The big favorite from Kiel, who had to do without regular goalkeeper Niklas Landin due to a corona quarantine, had a hard time well into the second half and missed many clear chances.

Only in the last quarter of an hour did the Leipzigers' strength dwindle, so that the THW achieved a befitting success.
