Dresden (dpa / sn) - After 15 years at the Saxon State Library - State and University Library (SLUB) Dresden, General Director Achim Bonte is leaving the facility.

The 57-year-old is to head the Berlin State Library, the largest academic library in Germany, from September 1, as the SLUB announced on Wednesday with reference to a decision by the Board of Trustees of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Saxony's Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow (CDU) emphasized that Bonte was leaving behind a very well-positioned building that was “perfectly equipped” for the future of the library system.

The search for a successor will be initiated in the next few weeks.

Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters, chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, described Bonte as a “proven expert with clear ideas for the library of the 21st century”.

The historian and Germanist comes from Karlsruhe (Baden-Württemberg).

From 1996 to 2006 he was at the Heidelberg University Library, then came to the SLUB as deputy director and has been its general director since 2018.

Under his leadership, the digital library was expanded, innovative formats for imparting knowledge and communication were established, more third-party funding was acquired and the SLUB became a place for social debates.

Bonte also initiated a “SLUB 2025” strategy process as a basis for the future.
