Naumburg (dpa / sa) - The public prosecutor's offices in Saxony-Anhalt received around 800 proceedings in 2020 in connection with violations of the Federal Infection Protection Act.

A spokesman for the Public Prosecutor's Office in Naumburg (Burgenlandkreis) said that environmental crime, including these proceedings, has increased significantly.

According to the information, around 1,420 new proceedings were initiated in the area of environmental crime in 2020 in Saxony-Anhalt.

That was almost 83 percent more than in the previous year (2019: 780 proceedings).

"Because the corona pandemic did not yet exist in 2019," said the spokesman.

Violations of the Federal Infection Protection Act were, for example, when more people than allowed met or did not wear a mask, he explained.

Nevertheless, the investigators had also dealt with environmental crimes such as illegal waste disposal.

These included "rust arbors" that were illegally parked in the countryside and lost oil.

In Saxony-Anhalt, strict corona rules with contact restrictions, distance and hygiene regulations have been in effect since March 2020 in order to contain the spread of the virus.

The state government had also issued a catalog of fines.

Violations can be punished as an administrative offense with fines or as a criminal offense.
