Mönchengladbach (dpa) - For Philipp Lahm, the possible engagement of Xabi Alonso as coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach would be “a great move” by sports director Max Eberl.

"Xabi Alonso has everything that makes a successful coach," said Alonso's former teammate Lahm to the portal "t-online.de".

"As a player, he was an absolute strategist and a game-expert, he radiated calm and strength and was central to his position in midfield," said the 2014 world champion captain about the Basque, with whom he once played at Bayern.

The 39-year-old Alonso is, according to information from “Bild” and “Sportbild”, a candidate for coaching at the Bundesliga club in Mönchengladbach.

The current head coach Marco Rose will move to Borussia Dortmund this summer.

But Eberl's search is not yet over.

A decision is not necessarily to be expected in the short term.

After retiring in 2017, Alonso initially worked in the youth division of Real Madrid and is currently coaching Real Sociedad San Sebastián's second team in the third Spanish division.

According to Spanish media reports, Alonso should also have other offers.
