Szekesfehervar (dpa / lno) - U21 national coach Stefan Kuntz didn't have to convince Stephan Ambrosius of the second division soccer team Hamburger SV to play at the European Football Championship.

«It happened that we spoke on the phone.

But he told me relatively quickly that he would like to take part in the European Championship for the German U21s, ”said the 58-year-old on Tuesday in Szekesfehervar, Hungary.

Ambrosius is also said to have received an invitation for the Ghanaian national team.

The 22-year-old was born in Hamburg and has German citizenship and, through his parents, Ghanaian citizenship.

At HSV, he has earned a regular place in central defense this season.

With his participation in the U21 European Championship, however, no decision has yet been made whether he will play for Ghana's senior national team in the future or whether he is hoping for a place on the German team.

At the U21 European Championship in Hungary, Ambrosius will face fellow hosts Hungary in the first group A match on Wednesday.

Other opponents are the Netherlands on Saturday and Romania next Tuesday.

In addition to Ambrosius, 20-year-old Josha Vagnoman has a second HSV player at the tournament.

The full-back, who was also born in Hamburg, suffered a double ligament tear at the end of January and was out for almost a month.

Nevertheless, he quickly caught up again.

"With him, of course, we were a bit shocked when he was injured," said Kuntz.

"We were all the more delighted when we saw how he was reintegrated into the regular line-up so quickly after the injury in the last few weeks and performed very well."
