Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The decision on the future of several villages on the edge of the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine is to be made at the end of 2026 according to the plans of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government.

The new leading decision for the Rhenish Revier states “that Keyenberg and the other villages of the third resettlement section may not be used for mining before the end of 2026,” said Minister of Economic Affairs Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting.

Then it should be checked whether the requirements for the use of these areas by the energy company RWE are still met.

That gives the people who want to stay in the villages “a certain perspective”, stressed Pinkwart.

Residents and environmental associations responded to the new key decision with sharp criticism.

The state government is forcing the final destruction of still inhabited places such as Lützerath, said the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND).

Keyenberg and five other villages were demolished with the date 2026.
