Berlin (dpa) - Almost half of the German population refuses to host the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.

According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov commissioned by the German Press Agency, 48 percent of Germans believe that hosts Japan and the International Olympic Committee are sticking to their plans for the Tokyo Games despite the corona pandemic.

On the other hand, 33 percent of those surveyed are in favor of holding the summer games in July and August.

19 percent were undecided.

The Olympics in Tokyo were actually planned for summer 2020.

Due to the corona crisis, however, Japan and the IOC decided on March 24 of last year to postpone the games by one year.

Because the pandemic situation is still threatening in many countries and Japan fears a wave of new infections, foreign Olympic fans are not allowed to enter this summer.

The Olympic torch relay is scheduled to start in Fukushima on March 25th.

The opening ceremony will take place without a spectator.

All 47 prefectures of Japan are to be headed for the run before the fire is kindled in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

The opening of the games is scheduled for July 23rd.

The summer games should be "proof of the victory against the coronavirus," said Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

However, in recent polls, a majority of the Japanese were in favor of another postponement or complete cancellation of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
