Cologne (dpa) - As in the previous year, the traditional cycle race “Around Cologne” has been canceled for 2021.

As the organizers announced, the 104th edition of the race planned for June 6th cannot take place.

It is said that it will not be held at a later date because of the extreme density of races in the second half of the year.

"The current Corona rules, accompanied by a very bumpy vaccination campaign, increasing numbers of infections and various virus mutations, unfortunately do not allow any other decision," explained Managing Director Markus Frisch of the "Cologne Marathon Event and Advertising GmbH", which will continue to apply to the after the takeover in 2019 the first staging of the oldest one-day race in Germany has to wait under their direction.

The rejection was "a shame, because we had already received inquiries from some well-known professional teams," said club chairman Berthold Schmitt and assured: "In 2022 we will finally be offering great cycling in Cologne again."
