Yesterday, the Arab League called on Lebanese politicians to work quickly to end the "political blockage" in their country, and offered to intervene to help overcome the crisis.

The Arab League said in a statement, "The Secretary General, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, feels great concern due to the debates in the political arena that suggest the country is sliding into a severe crisis situation, whose features are now clearly visible."

The university added that the political stalemate "exacerbates the suffering of the Lebanese people," indicating that it is ready "to do whatever it is asked of to heal the current rift."

The Lebanon crisis worsened after Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri and President Michel Aoun failed again to agree on a government.

On the other hand, Aoun confirmed yesterday his country's keenness to stabilize the southern region.

During his meeting with the Deputy Special Coordinator of the United Nations in Lebanon, Najat Rushdie, he indicated Lebanon's keenness to enhance cooperation between the Lebanese army and the international forces operating in the south (UNIFIL).

He pointed to the damage caused by the leakage of petroleum products from the shores of Palestine to the Lebanese shores in terms of environmental and water wealth.

The meeting touched on "the continuation of Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty, which were the subject of condemnation in the Security Council."

The research dealt with "the need to form a new government to face the current developments, and to define priorities for the restoration of the country."

The "UNIFIL" was established according to two resolutions issued by the UN Security Council on March 19, 1978, to confirm the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore international peace and security, and to help the Lebanese government regain its effective authority in the region.

After the July 2006 war, the Security Council strengthened "UNIFIL" and assigned it additional tasks by working in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon.
