Berlin (dpa) - On World Water Day this Monday (March 22nd), the municipal water suppliers advertised drinking tap water.

Drinking water from the tap is still the best thirst quencher, said the Vice President of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU), Karsten Specht, according to a statement.

"No transport routes, no lugging bottles, no unnecessary plastic waste: we get all of this at an unbeatably attractive price averaging around 0.2 cents per liter."

However, it is important to better protect water resources.

"It is more effective and economical to consistently prevent the contamination of water resources."

Otherwise it will be more and more time-consuming and expensive to deliver drinking water of the prescribed quality.

The VKU represents the interests of the municipal supply and disposal industry.

According to their own statements, the VKU members supply around 90 percent of all German residents with drinking water.

According to VKU information, there are around 6,000 municipal water suppliers in Germany.
