Syke (dpa / lni) - A fire broke out on Monday on the site of a metal works in Syke in the Diepholz district.

According to the first findings of the police, working with a motorized garden tool in a hall led to flying sparks, after which a car first caught fire.

The flames spread to a large hall and two adjacent smaller halls - a total of 4,000 square meters were affected.

Several fire brigades were on site with numerous emergency services, as police spokesman Thomas Gissing said.

"The column of smoke can be seen for miles."

He expected that the fire brigade would be busy with extinguishing work until late at night.

Nobody got hurt.

The «Kreiszeitung» had initially reported on the fire.

The buildings of adjacent companies and a workshop for disabled people were evacuated.

Residents should keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke.

The police spokesman was unable to provide any information about the damage, as it was initially unclear what was being stored in the halls.
