March 22, 2021 Mafia fugitive Mario Giulio Calderone was arrested this morning in Greece, near the city of Larissa.

He is a prominent member of the Barcelona mafia family.



64 years old, since 2016 he has been included in the list of dangerous fugitives drawn up by the Integrated Interforces Group for the search of fugitives (Giirl) of the Ministry of the Interior.

His arrest was carried out by the Greek police upon activation of the Messina carabinieri.



Calderone had been a fugitive for over ten years, struck by a definitive sentence for the crime of mafia-type association, as he was recognized as organic to the mafia family operating in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (Messina) and on the Tyrrhenian side of the province of Messina.



A criminal formation historically linked to the Cosa Nostra of Palermo and Catania and one of the bloodiest and best organized militarily in the mafia scene of the Peloritan province.



The investigations for the search of the fugitive were developed by the investigative unit of the provincial command of Messina, on the delegation of the district anti-mafia prosecutor of Messina, thanks also to an intelligence contribution provided by the Internal Agency which made it possible to locate Calderone in a house in the Greek locality of Pyrgos - Polydendri Agias, where the companion lived under a false name for some time.



The intervention of the Greek authorities was requested by the carabinieri through the service for the International Police Cooperation - Sirene Division which activated the Hellenic Fugitive Active Search Team, part of the European Network of Active Fugitive Search Teams (Enfast).



The arrest was carried out in execution of the European arrest warrant issued against the fugitive by the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Messina Court of Appeal by virtue of a final sentence of 6 years, 11 months and 19 days of imprisonment. at the conclusion of the "Mare Nostrum" survey of the 1990s.



The arrested fugitive is considered an element of a strong criminal caliber.

He was the last of the Mafia affiliates, still on the run, of the Barcelona mafia family.

He was indicated by numerous collaborators of justice, as a person once very close to Giuseppe Gullotti, historical head of the mafia faction, currently in prison.



The arrest of Mario Giulio Calderone is part of the progressive contrast maneuver coordinated by the Messina district prosecutor against the Barcelona mafia family.



A family that has been at the center of various sentences and numerous criminal proceedings (Mare Nostrum, Icaro, Eris, Vivaio, Pozzo, Gotha, etc.) that have decimated the ranks with the arrest and conviction of historical leaders and gregarious, documenting the associative structure, the modus operandi and the heinous crimes, in the various periods of internal reorganization of the association, up to the last repressive intervention, carried out in February 2020 with the "Dynasty" operation of the ROS and the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Messina.



At the end of the ordinary extradition procedures by the International Police Cooperation service, Mario Giulio Calderone will be transferred to Italy.
