Limburg / Driedorf (dpa / lhe) - One year after an unusual weapon was found on an uprooted tree in Central Hesse, the investigations are ongoing.

There is still a suspect known by name, said the Limburg Public Prosecutor Hans-Joachim Herrchen when asked by the German Press Agency.

So far, there have been no indications of a political background.

The investigators assumed that the suspect was a gun freak.

It is being investigated because of possible violations of the War Weapons Control Act and the Weapons Act.

About a year ago a storm knocked down a tree and uncovered four buried weapon boxes near Driedorf (Lahn-Dill district).

Experts from the State Criminal Police Office then examined the hand grenades, pistols and explosives found.

A police spokesman said a year ago that it was a matter of finding out the manufacturer, the year of construction, the place of production and the supply chain.

According to the owners, the investigations are still ongoing.

Weapons are often discovered in apartments and garages, said the prosecutor.

But the amount, as in the case of the weapon found on the uprooted tree, is already "somewhat exclusive".

"This is an exceptional case for us," said master.

Since the boxes were very tight, the weapons were in good condition, he explained.

"They seem to have been stored there longer."

The suspect, who currently does not live in Hesse, was searched in May 2020, the public prosecutor said.

The man was in possession of a gun license, which was withdrawn from him in 2015.

Weapons finds in Hessian forests - like in Driedorf - are extremely rare, said a spokesman for the State Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden.

"The cases known here from the past five years are in the lower single-digit range."
