Hanover (dpa / lni) - Burglaries have become rarer in Lower Saxony in the Corona year 2020.

The reason: If people are more often at home in the home office because of the lockdown, there are fewer opportunities for home burglaries.

Short-time work is also a reason.

Pistorius presents crime statistics

Today in Hanover, Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) presents the new numbers of the police crime statistics for 2020 online.

According to dpa information, numerous crimes related to the corona pandemic can be expected - these could be fake health certificates from corona deniers or resistance to police officers during controls.

The statistics also showed falling numbers in other federal states.

25 percent fewer break-ins

According to preliminary data from the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office last December, the number of break-ins in 2020 was around 25 percent lower than in 2019. In addition to the pandemic restrictions, a spokeswoman justified this with the limited travel within Europe.

A similar trend was also evident in the case of burglaries in commercial properties and businesses, but the decline was not as pronounced as in the case of burglaries.

However: In phases when the pandemic measures were relaxed, an increase in car thefts, for example, up to the previous year's level was noted.

As early as 2019, the number of burglaries decreased

As early as 2019, there had been another significant decline in home break-ins in Lower Saxony - by 15.59 percent to 9456 cases.

In the high year of the break-in, 1993, there were almost three times as many, said Pistorius last year.

The total number of registered crimes was exactly 506,582 in 2019, three fewer than a year earlier.

The clearance rate rose from 62.8 percent to 63.4 percent.

Increase in domestic violence in Bremen

In Bremen, the corona pandemic had a significant impact on the type and number of criminal offenses.

The number of burglaries in 2020 fell by 20.7 percent compared to the previous year - pickpockets by as much as 43.4 percent.

In contrast, domestic violence in the city increased by around 16 percent, while burglaries in offices and workrooms rose by 34 percent.
