Atletico Madrid strengthened its lead in the Spanish Football League after defeating Deportivo Alaves with a clean goal, on Sunday, in the 28th round of the La Liga competition.

This round also saw Villarreal beat Cadiz 2-1, Valencia defeated Granada 2-1, and Getafe drew 1-1 with Elche.

Atletico Madrid owes this victory to Luis Suarez, who scored the game's only goal (54).

The match saw José Luis Samartin, the Alaves player, missed a penalty kick in the 86th minute, after Slovenian Jan Oblak deflected the "Al Atleti" goalkeeper.

Atletico Madrid raised its score on 66 points at the top of the standings, and Alaves' score stopped at 23 points in the nineteenth place penultimate.

Suarez raised his goal tally to 19, to finish second behind Lionel Messi, Barcelona's captain, who scored 21 goals.

And Suárez became the fifth player still in the green rectangle to reach his 500 goal, after Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Swedish Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Polish Robert Lewandowski.
