Berlin / Dresden (dpa) - According to the FDP member of the Bundestag Torsten Herbst, Deutsche Bahn has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to equipping its stations with WiFi.
Only 2.5 percent of all train stations offer the railway's own, free “Wifi @ DB”, according to a response from the federal government to an FDP request.
As of December 31, 2020, this was a total of 135 of 5376 stations. "If the railway wants to compete with other means of transport in the future, it must finally do its homework and convince with attractive offers and the best service," said the Dresden FDP politician Herbst .
When asked, Deutsche Bahn AG referred to other offers.
«With our Wifi @ DB offer, we already reach more than half of our travelers.
Nationwide, our customers have free WiFi available at over 600 train stations, ”said a spokeswoman.
In addition, plans are being made to «significantly expand» the Wifi @ DB service.

In response to the minor question from the FDP MPs, the Federal Ministry of Transport, with reference to the railway, announced that five more stations are to be equipped with the WLAN network “Wifi @ DB” in the next five years: Aschaffenburg, the airports BER and Berlin -Schönefeld as well as the train station Berlin-Charlottenburg and Offenbach (market place).
Berlin currently has the highest proportion of “Wifi @ DB” train stations with nine percent, and Brandenburg has the lowest with one percent.
Also Baden-Württemberg (2.0 percent), Bavaria (1.6), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (1.7), Rhineland-Palatinate (1.4), Saarland (1.3), Saxony (2.0) , Saxony-Anhalt (2.1) and Thuringia (1.4) are still below the nationwide average.
