March 21, 2021 "Small signs of a slowdown" in the trend of the Covid epidemic. The president of the Gimbe Foundation, Nino Cartabellotta, spoke about it at Ansa. Small signs that can be glimpsed in the last 3-4 days and "could represent the beginning the effects of the new restrictive measures, which will be clearly visible 2-3 weeks after their introduction ".

Hospitals

What remains, however, is the pressure in hospitals.

As of March 20 in the medical area, the national figure (41%) exceeds the alert level of 40% with Lombardy at 51%, Emilia Romagna at 54%, Piedmont at 58% and Marche at 64%.

Intensive care and other patients

For intensive care, the national figure (37%) is well above the alert level of 30%, with 6 regions exceeding 50%: Emilia Romagna, Piedmont and Umbria (53%), Lombardy (56%), Marche and Autonomous Province of Trento (58%).

"These levels of overload, explains the president of the Gimbe Foundation Nino Cartabellotta, in addition to making the care of Covid patients more complex, increase the stress of hospital staff and services and require postponing surgery and other non-urgent services for non-Covid patients. ".

The third wave

The third wave "grafted" into the descending phase of the second, continues Cartabellotta, starting from a "plateau" with over 382 thousand currently positive cases, 17,725 patients hospitalized in medical departments and 2,082 in intensive care.

"In about 4 weeks, these numbers have skyrocketed to over 565,000, 27,061 and 3,387 respectively. As a result, the regions that have experienced greater circulation of the virus have quickly reached a saturation of beds".
