Bremen (AP) - VfL Wolfsburg has once again underpinned its premier class ambitions and consolidated third place in the Bundesliga.

Coach Oliver Glasner's team defeated Werder Bremen on Saturday deservedly 2-1 (2-1).

For Lower Saxony it was the eighth league win in the past ten games.

Werder's Joshua Sargent scored an own goal in the 9th minute and striker Wout Weghorst (42nd) scored the goals for Wolfsburg in the Weser Stadium.

The goal by Kevin Möhwald (45th) was too little for Bremen.

Werder are still in midfield with 30 points.

The lead over the relegation relegation place can shrink to six points on Sunday.

Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt had expected a "very fast-paced game", "which will be characterized by a lot of physicality".

At least when it comes to physical exertion, he should be right.

Both teams fought intense duels in midfield.

The defensive ranks were good, and neither Wolfsburg nor Werder initially had scoring opportunities out of the game.

A dangerous free kick was enough for VfL to take the lead.

Maximilian Arnold crossed from the half-field into the penalty area, where Bremen's striker Sargent hit the ball with his head and gave his goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka no chance.

For Sargent it was the first own goal in the 63rd Bundesliga game.

After the 1-0 win, Wolfsburg gained advantages and kept SVW away from their own goal.

"Bravo," shouted Glasner after defender Kevin Mbabu had won a duel and repeated the expression of great satisfaction shortly afterwards.

The Austrian would have been even more happy if his top striker had used his first big chance to make it 2-0.

Weghorst was aiming from an acute angle after just under half an hour, but not precisely enough.

In a turbulent final phase of the first half, the Dutchman did better.

Weghorst took advantage of a mistake by the hosts in the build-up of the game to score his 17th goal of the season.

He set his personal goal record for the season and also scored his 50th Bundesliga goal.

Werder did not give up.

Möhwald made the connection before the break.

But whoever expected Bremen offensive power after the break, was mistaken.

Wolfsburg had the better chances.

Weghorst and Mbabu missed a preliminary decision (62nd).

So it stayed tight on the pitch, but it got heated on the sidelines.

"A little respect over there," Glasner demanded from the Bremer Bank after it had been loud again.

Nothing changed in the result because Werder remained too harmless at the front.
