Munich (AP) - Former Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes would have wished for a record national player Lothar Matthäus a coaching job in the Bundesliga.

"I very much regret that Lothar never had a commitment in the Bundesliga, I would have liked to see him," said Heynckes in an interview with "Sportbuzzer" (Saturday) on Matthäus' 60th birthday this Sunday.

"He could certainly have passed on all the knowledge and experience from his career."

Unfortunately, the coaching career of the 150-time German national soccer player was "too uncoordinated".

Matthäus was recently traded as a possible successor to Joachim Löw as national coach.

From Heynckes' point of view, who brought the then 18-year-old to Borussia Mönchengladbach as a player in 1979, Matthäus would have done a consultant for his coaching career.

“He didn't have that, he was on his own.

Then maybe it would not have been so erratic. "

The 75-year-old Heynckes also believes that Matthäus' "eventful private life (...) was not beneficial" for his career.

Heynckes praised the 1990 world champion as an "honest, positive-thinking, warm-hearted person who was" always ready to help ".

"It took a while after the end of his active career, but he has now matured into a great sports personality," said Heynckes.

In his role as a TV expert for the TV broadcaster Sky, Matthäus is authentic.

"A person who does not pretend, but expresses his opinion clearly, but never hurtfully."

He has the feeling that “he is deeply satisfied with his current life”.
