In Kassel, Germany, police have deployed pepper spray and water cannons against a demonstration that gathered thousands of participants.

Behind the protest are people with connections to the so-called Querdenken movement - a mixture of corona deniers, right-wing extremists and vaccine opponents, writes TT.

Confrontations with police

The protesters had been allowed to stay in two places in the eastern parts of the city, but when protesters entered the center, confrontations broke out with police, the newspaper Hessische Niedersächsische Allgemeine reports.

Police estimate that about 10 000 people taking part in the demonstration in the center.

The inner city is closed to bus and tram traffic.

London protesters march on Westminster

In London, people gathered in Hyde Park to head for Westminster.

Some of the protesters were taken into custody by police, reports the BBC.

In the small Swiss town of Liestal, between 3,000 and 5,000 people gathered for a silent protest to demand an end to measures that forced restaurants and other public spaces to be closed for months.

1,800 police officers will keep order in Berlin

In Berlin, more than 1,800 police officers are on duty to keep order during a series of demonstrations over the weekend.

Safe meeting places have also been set up for journalists where reporters who feel threatened can withdraw, the newspaper Berliner Zeitung states.

Around 400 people demonstrated in Helsinki on Saturday.

The police allowed the protesters to continue after they divided into smaller groups, writes the news agency SPT.
