Erfurt (dpa / th) - On the occasion of the International Day of Forests on Sunday, various organizations and parties have proposed initiatives for the future use of the forest resource.

The Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) called for a new "forest strategy" for Thuringia on Friday.

Forests must be managed more ecologically in order to better arm them against climate stress.

The FDP parliamentary group in the state parliament called on the state government to set up a "forest task force".

In addition to experts from state authorities, this working group should also include representatives of forest owners, the timber industry and specialists in forest health, according to the Liberals.

Their task should be to develop a binding forest strategy for Thuringia.

The Greens drew attention to the fact that more than half of the trees in the forests of the Free State showed severe loss of vitality.

These are caused, among other things, by rising temperatures, drought and bark beetle infestation, all of which are consequences of the climate crisis.

"Not only the forest conversion is overdue, but consistent climate policy - that is the only salvation for the Thuringian Forest," said state spokeswoman Ann-Sophie Bohm.

The nature conservation association Nabu starts its Luchswald project on the International Day of Forests.

In the future, up to three forests in Thuringia are to be honored, in which the lynx finds undisturbed places of refuge and which thus stand for the protection of forest nature and habitat.

"More nature conservation in the forest also means better living conditions for many other species and at the same time promoting the adaptability of forests to climate change," said Silvester Tamás, project coordinator at Nabu Thuringia.
