The Kremlin comments on the outbreak of a new cold war: Russia is preparing for the worst

The Kremlin said, on Friday, that Moscow always aspires to the best but prepares for the worst, in response to a question about the possibility of a new cold war between Russia and the United States.

Relations between the two countries reached a new low this week after US President Joe Biden said in an interview that he believed his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, a "murderer", which prompted Russia to recall its ambassador from the United States.

Later, Putin offered to hold public talks on the Internet with Biden in the coming days.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Putin's offer to hold talks with Biden was still valid, adding that Putin could do so at any time convenient for Biden, even if the offer would not remain on the table forever.

"Putin said that despite everything there is no point in loud diplomacy and exchanging criticism, but there is a point in continuing relations," he told reporters in a conference call.

In response to a question about the possibility of a new cold war between the two countries, he said, "Of course we always aspire for the best, but we are always preparing for the worst. As for Russia, President Putin made clear his desire to continue relations."

"But of course we cannot ignore Biden's statements," he said, referring to Biden's interview with ABC on Wednesday.

During the interview, Biden also described Putin as heartless, and said he would pay the price for his interference in the US presidential elections in November 2020, which the Kremlin denies.
