Samia Hassan is sworn in as President of Tanzania

Tanzania's Vice President, Samia Salouhi, was sworn in yesterday, becoming the first woman to hold the presidency of that East African country.

This comes two days after the Tanzanian government announced the death of the country's president, John Magufuli, of a heart attack.

Samia Hassan was sworn in before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Ibrahim Jumaa, in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

The 61-year-old statistician, who hails from Zanzibar, entered politics in 2000 and quickly rose to prominence, holding various ministerial positions.

Bloomberg News reported that the country's constitution grants the vice president the right to complete the presidential term, in the event of his death.

Bloomberg added that although Samia Hassan is widely seen as a smart politician, she lacks strong support in political circles, and needs to win the support of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, if she intends to keep power until the next presidential election in 2010. 2025.
