Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Last year, Düsseldorf Airport was in the red for the first time since 1997.

The balance sheet for 2020 published on Friday shows a deficit of 182.4 million euros.

“Through the Corona crisis, Düsseldorf Airport got into an existence-threatening situation through no fault of its own.

The effects of the pandemic are devastating, ”commented airport boss Thomas Schnalke on the business figures.

Last year, the airport counted around 74 percent fewer passengers and around 65 percent fewer flight movements.

The revenues of the largest airport in North Rhine-Westphalia therefore plummeted from a good 501 million euros in 2019 to 187.7 million euros last year.

In order to keep the airport solvent, the shareholders left the 2019 net income of 63 million euros in the company and also agreed to a loan of 100 million euros.

The airport also received a loan of 250 million euros from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and NRW.Bank.

The airport is reducing its workforce in order to cut costs over the long term.

"The course has been set to secure the airport's existence beyond the crisis," said Schnalke.

"But the situation is still serious."

Since air traffic developed worse than planned in the first few months of 2021 due to the worsening of the pandemic, the financial situation will remain tense this year, according to the airport's statement.
