Hamburg / Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) - The credit agency Crifbürgel expects a wave of insolvencies in Hesse this year due to the corona pandemic.

The number of company bankruptcies could almost double in the state compared to 2020.

In total, more than 2500 corporate insolvencies are possible in Hesse, reported Crifbürgel managing director Frank Schlein on Friday in Hamburg.

"Due to the Corona crisis, many companies in Germany currently have economic problems," said Schlein.

Nationwide, more than 300,000 companies are currently in financial difficulties.

However, this has not yet been reflected in the insolvency figures.

On the contrary: According to Crifbürgel, only 1,369 companies filed for bankruptcy in Hesse last year, 7.6 percent fewer than in the previous year.

The main reason for this development is the suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency in combination with the numerous aid packages for the companies.

The effects of the pandemic on the economy are therefore only gradually becoming apparent, Schlein said.

In addition to the “normal” bankruptcy events, there was a risk of around 1165 additional bankruptcies in Hesse this year.

"Small businesses with fewer than ten employees are particularly affected," said Schlein.
