Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's health authorities should soon be using the Luca app for contact tracking.

"For this we are on the home straight - the contract is planned for the next week," said Senate spokeswoman Melanie Reinsch of the German press agency.

"The health authorities are connected - as well as the Federal Printing Office, which organizes the secure data transfer."

In the current pandemic situation, additional protective measures are necessary for the current and future opening steps, said Reinsch.

"This applies in particular to the area of contact tracking."

For this, secure and effective digital solutions are required in order to be able to quickly interrupt chains of infection by the health authorities.

"The Luca system is a very suitable instrument for this because it offers a quickly available and targeted solution based on the needs of the health authorities," said the Senate spokeswoman.

Berlin aims to use the app as soon as possible.

Berlin's governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) announced on Thursday after a video switch from the prime minister that he no longer wanted to wait for the slowest man.

It must now be possible to come to an agreement very quickly on how possible opening steps can be made more secure with digital platforms through contact tracking and networking.

"And I'll say clearly here: If that doesn't come to a conclusive result in our group, I'll do it on my own with this app."

Another call of the country leaders together with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is planned for Monday.

The app has been in use in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since last Friday.

It is supposed to make visiting shops, restaurants, cultural establishments or hotels safer.

In the event of a proven corona case, the health authorities can access the encrypted data for contact tracking.

Guests, hosts and health authorities are involved in the Luca system.

It is most convenient for guests to install the associated Luca app on their smartphone.

You can also enter your own contact details via the web.

Check-in on site takes place with the help of the smartphone camera, which reads in a graphic code (QR code).

The Luca app has made headlines in recent weeks because it was promoted by hip-hop singer Smudo.

His band Die Fantastischen Vier is involved in the “Luca Initiative” around the Berlin developer company Nexenio.
