Berlin / Munich (dpa) - With a view to the mask affair in the Union, left leader Janine Wissler has asked CSU leader Markus Söder to clean up his party.

"The renewed expansion of the mask affair, this time to the Bavarian state parliament member (Alfred) Sauter, confirms: Corruption is a systemic problem in the Union parties," said Wissler of the "Augsburger Allgemeine" (Thursday).

The point is to finally put an end to an enormous grievance.

"In the future, CSU chairman Markus Söder will also have to be measured by whether and how committed he is to this task."

As it became known on Wednesday, the affair is now also being investigated against Bavaria's former Justice Minister Alfred Sauter.

The public prosecutor's office in Munich had his state parliament office searched, among other things.

According to the investigators and the CSU, the allegations are related to the allegations of corruption against the member of the Bundestag Georg Nüßlein, who has since left the CSU.

Because of questionable mask deals, he and the CDU MP Nikolas Löbel had left their parties.

Löbel has also resigned from the Bundestag.

According to his party, Sauter rejects the allegations.

The CSU legal politician Volker Ullrich called in the "Augsburger Allgemeine" for members of parliament "a binding and sanctioned ban on pursuing paid interest representation or operating or owning consulting firms."

Income that would be generated in the future despite this ban would have to be skimmed off.
