Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The Astrazeneca agent is again administered in Hamburg for corona vaccinations.

However, unlike in other federal states, there is no particular hurry because no appointments have been canceled in the city even after the vaccinations with the agent have been suspended, the health authority said on Thursday evening.

Senator Melanie Leonhard (SPD) had previously warned against hasty steps following a decision by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on Astrazeneca.

The EMA had concluded that the benefits of vaccination with Astrazeneca continued to outweigh the risks associated with vaccination.

However, an extra warning will be added against possible rare cases of blood clots (thrombosis) in cerebral veins, according to a special meeting of the safety committee in Amsterdam.

The Federal Ministry of Health and the Standing Vaccination Commission also joined the assessment later.

Germany and other EU countries stopped using the vaccine after reports of side effects earlier this week.

In order to be able to continue vaccinating, Hamburg had changed its program and also gave people under 80 the vaccines from Biontech and Moderna, in order to compensate for the failure of the Astrazeneca remedy at short notice.

With the resumption of vaccinations, Astrazeneca can also be administered to people with special diseases in specialized practices.

Several thousand cans were delivered last Monday and were still there in the refrigerators, it said.

The vaccination in Hamburg will continue to be advanced, said Leonhard.

"And quickly, but not hectically."

Appointments in the central vaccination center in the exhibition halls are currently suspended.

Additional groups would be called based on the availability of vaccines, the senator said.

The doctor's practices would also be included in the vaccination campaign across the board, “as soon as enough vaccine is available”.
