Rostock (dpa) - Hope from the far north: Despite increasing numbers of infections and an approaching third corona wave, football fans are allowed to return to the stadium in a pilot project in Rostock.

139 days after the last game with spectators, 777 people will be able to watch the third division game between FC Hansa Rostock and Halleschen FC in the Ostseestadion on Saturday.

At its meeting, the state government in Schwerin approved a corresponding application by the Rostock association management.

This should be a sign of hope for fans and clubs across the country.

The last professional game with fans so far took place on November 1, 2020.

At that time 450 spectators followed the 3: 4 of Karlsruher SC against SV Darmstadt 98 in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Now Rostock's low seven-day incidence, which was less than 25 infections per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday, enables a return under special conditions.

Only season ticket holders living in Rostock and ticket holders of Hansa partner companies are admitted.

Rapid tests are carried out in front of the stadium gates, and masking and clearance is mandatory in the stands.

In combination with tests and hygiene rules, FC Hansa Rostock recommends that viewers in Rostock use the “Luca” app, which enables uncomplicated follow-up of contacts in the event of an infection.

Preparations for a return of the fans are already underway in the Bundesliga.

On the previous day of the match, 1. FC Union Berlin used a quick test system for the first time, in which helpers, stewards and media representatives could voluntarily have themselves tested before entering the stadium.

The findings from this should help to allow spectators back into the An der Alten Försterei stadium as soon as possible.

RB Leipzig also wants to proceed in a similar way.

The Saxon project provides for up to 2000 tickets for vaccinated people and people with negative rapid tests, reported the “Bild” on Thursday.

The club is not interested in money; according to CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, 1000 fans would "make a loss of around 180,000 euros per game day".

The first game with a reasonably large backdrop could be the cup final on May 13th in Berlin.

Dortmund's managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke suggested last week that people vaccinated against Corona from medical and social care should be allowed into the stadium free of charge.

According to Watzke, this could be between 10,000 and 15,000 people.
