Several supporters of the Extinction Rebellion climate protection movement chained themselves to both sides of Hamburg's Köhlbrand Bridge on Thursday, obstructing traffic for several hours.

The activists had chained themselves to the central barrier, said a police spokesman.

In order to be able to guarantee the safety of the climate protectors and the emergency services, the police blocked off one of the two lanes in each direction.

"In the local area, there were therefore traffic obstructions both into the port and in the direction of Autobahn 7."

On the east side of the bridge, those who were chained to the bridge had already been released around 2 p.m., so traffic then flowed again on both lanes.

On the west side, the operation lasted until 4 p.m.

Extinction Rebellion claims that the action wanted to get politicians to act on the climate crisis.

“Acknowledge climate emergency” read a banner hung on the central barrier.

The activists had already blocked the bridge in November 2020 to send a signal against excessive consumption.

The striking Köhlbrand Bridge is an important artery of the Port of Hamburg.
