March 18, 2021 The Czech Republic will pay compensation to Roma women for having undergone forced surgery to remove the uterus (sterilization).

Each victim will receive a payment of around 12,000 euros.

The bill, among others, was proposed by Helena Valkova, a member of the House of Representatives and a member of the Action of Dissatisfied Citizens (ANO) party.

According to her, the lower house of parliament quickly passed the law, with 77 out of 99 deputies voting for it.

"This gives me hope that the law can go into effect before the general elections to be held in October 2021," Valkova said.

She believes that the compensation should be paid as soon as possible, as many of the victims are now 60-70 years old.

In the period between the 1970s and 1980s, thousands of Roma women living in the then Czechoslovakia were forcibly sterilized.
