Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In order to move forward with the expansion of photovoltaics, Baden-Württemberg can imagine using old landfill areas.

They were ideally suited as a location for photovoltaic systems, said the head of the Ministry of the Environment, Helmfried Meinel, on Thursday in Stuttgart.

Such a subsequent use would take the open space photovoltaics in the country an important step forward.

The State Institute for the Environment Baden-Württemberg is currently investigating the potential of various landfill sites for photovoltaics.

This could make an important contribution to climate protection and the energy transition.

In the opinion of the head of the office, the dumping of waste cannot be dispensed with in the future.

Because there is still waste that has to be disposed of because it cannot be treated or recycling is not possible.

Because the amount of these substances, such as debris containing tar, asbestos-containing substances or contaminated soils, will continue to increase in the future.

"We now have to plan the additional capacities required for this and implement them together," Meinel was quoted in the message.
