Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Verdi union wants to achieve a significant increase in wages for employees in the emerging wage dispute in Baden-Württemberg's retail and mail order business.

They are demanding an increase in monthly wages by 4.5 percent as well as a further 45 euros and an increase in training allowances by 100 euros a month, Verdi announced on Wednesday in Stuttgart.

In addition, a “fixed pension-based minimum wage” of 12.50 euros per hour is required.

In the event of short-time working, companies should also increase the income of their employees - to 100 percent of net earnings.

Verdi announced that it had terminated the current collective agreement with effect from the end of March.

If there were actually a new collective agreement, only a comparatively small number of employees would benefit from it at first.

Because only the collectively bound companies would have to implement the things that have been decided.

However, only a small part of the establishments is bound by collective bargaining agreements; Verdi put it at around a fifth of the total market in the south-west.

According to information from the HBW Südwest branch association, around 500,000 people are employed in the entire retail sector and are subject to social security contributions.

The corona crisis is currently affecting many retailers considerably.

Verdi pointed out, however, that the retail sector as a whole is achieving strong increases in sales and profits, albeit unevenly distributed.

Above all, the food as well as mail order and online trade are crisis winners.
