Tübingen (dpa / lsw) - The Mayor of Tübingen Boris Palmer (Greens) has asked the federal government to open up more opportunities to people again during the pandemic.

He demanded that the government “relies more on concepts that make life possible than prohibit it,” he said on RTL television on Wednesday.

Palmer sees the model project with city-wide rapid tests in Tübingen as an example of how this can be achieved.

One day after the start of the project, he drew an initial conclusion: "We did around 3,000 tests, none of which were positive," said Palmer.

Under certain circumstances, intensive testing can bring the numbers down better than shutting down culture, restaurants and shops, according to the Green politician.

In view of the generally increasing number of corona cases, Palmer assumes that Tübingen will not be able to decouple from the nationwide trend.

It looks like you're walking into a third wave, Palmer told the TV station.

But after a year of pandemic, one cannot simply say, "Then the next lockdown will come, the children will stay at home, the business will be closed and we will wait and see".

In Tübingen, a model project started on Tuesday to increase the number of opening steps in corona times.

At several test sites in the city, people can take free tests and the result is certified.

You can use it in shops or at the hairdresser's.

Outdoor catering and cultural institutions such as the theater are also allowed to receive and serve guests with certificates.
