Bremerhaven (dpa) - The almost 60-year-old Hamburg museum ship "Cap San Diego" has to pass the ship inspection in Bremerhaven - for ships this is called classification.

The stay at the Bredo Dry Docks shipyard will last until April 8 and cost around 1.4 million euros, said Ann-Kathrin Cornelius, managing director of the Cap San Diego operating company, on Wednesday.

"The main goal is to renew the class."

But the red and white paintwork of the Hamburg landmark is also being renewed - as one of around 200 work assignments to the shipyard and a crew of volunteers.

"During this stay in the shipyard, the focus is on the tanks," said Cornelius.

They have to be cleaned and made rustproof again.

The entire loading gear of the former general cargo carrier is also being serviced, and the lifeboat mounts are being replaced.

With the help of the volunteers, part of the wooden deck is also being renewed.

The "Cap San Diego" was put into service in 1962 and went to South America for the Hamburg Süd shipping company.

It has served as a museum and hotel since 2003, but is still seaworthy and sails out to the North or Baltic Sea several times a year with up to 500 passengers.

Due to the corona pandemic, the ship cannot currently be viewed.

On April 9, the "Cap San Diego" will return to her berth at the Überseebrücke in the port of Hamburg, said Cornelius.
