Cottbus (dpa / bb) - Due to the falling power consumption in the corona pandemic, the energy company Leag is planning to temporarily send some of its employees to short-time work.

A company spokeswoman announced on Wednesday when asked.

According to her, the Leag recorded up to 25 percent lower coal production in the past 12 months.

In view of the development of the pandemic so far, a short-term recovery in electricity demand is not expected.

The company assumes that the demand for raw lignite will stabilize again by autumn at the latest.

The rbb had previously reported.

Employees in the Jänschwalde opencast mine (Spree-Neisse) are particularly affected.

For organizational and technical reasons, the delivery rate should be reduced at this location, as it was said.

A smaller crew continues to ensure geotechnical safety.

According to the company, the cuts for the employees will be cushioned in a socially acceptable manner by the collective agreement.

Power plant employees are not affected by short-time work.

At the moment, the Leag is still waiting for the approval of the employment agency for the measure.

It is not yet possible to say when the short-time work will end again.

That depends on the further economic development and the demand for electricity in connection with the corona pandemic.
