Outbreaks of bird flu in laying hens, broilers and other poultry herds are thought to be linked to the spring migration of wild birds.

Infected ducks, geese and swans are known to carry bird flu, which spreads to other wild birds and domestic poultry on their migration route.

The map above and at the bottom of the article shows where ducks, geese and swans are currently on their way to migration.

New cases further north

So far, five farms in the county have been affected by the largest outbreak of bird flu in Sweden to date.

The most recent cases are two organic laying hen herds in Östergötland County, and a turkey herd in Tomelilla Municipality, Skåne County.

- With the birds' spring migration, we see new cases further and further north in the country, both on wild birds and domestic poultry.

It is extremely important to continue to protect their birds and follow the restrictions that exist, says Håkan Henrikson, chief veterinarian at the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

In Östergötland, four of the affected farms are within the same restricted area between Skänninge and Malmslätt.

Ducks, geese and swans are here right now.

The size of the circles shows the number of birds.

The color does not show what kind of bird but other observational data.
