On March 17, 2021, Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, accepted a joint interview with Chinese media and answered questions from reporters on the significance and expectations of the China-US high-level strategic dialogue.

"I hope both parties will come with sincerity and leave with a better mutual understanding"

CCTV reporter asked: The

Sino-US high-level strategic dialogue is about to be held. This dialogue is the first face-to-face communication between the two top leaders since the Biden administration took office.

What role do you think the dialogue will play in the direction of China-US relations in the future?

Cui Tiankai:

This high-level strategic dialogue between China and the United States in Anchorage is indeed the first face-to-face dialogue and communication between officials at this level since the Biden administration took office.

I think the two sides still attach great importance to this dialogue, and we have made a lot of preparations in the past few days.

Of course, we don't expect a single dialogue to solve all the problems between China and the United States, so there are no high expectations or illusions about this dialogue.

I hope this can be a beginning.

Both parties can start a process of candid, constructive, and rational dialogue and communication.

If this can be achieved, I think this dialogue is a success.

In short, I hope that both parties will come with sincerity and leave with a better understanding of each other.

"In terms of core interests, China has no room for compromise."

CCTV reporter asked: The

US claimed that it would talk about Taiwan, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, human rights and other topics in the dialogue, claiming that the dialogue will only be possible if the results the US wants is achieved in the future. What's China's response to this?

Will compromises and concessions be made?

Cui Tiankai:

I think that the most basic and basic premise for dialogue and communication between any countries is that both parties should have the spirit of equality and mutual respect.

The several issues you mentioned just now involve China's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.

With regard to these core interests, China has no room for compromise and concessions. This is also the attitude we will make clear in this meeting.

If it thinks that it unilaterally or finds several other countries to exert pressure on China, China will compromise and give in; if it thinks that we have so-called "results" for this dialogue, we will agree to the unilateral request of any party-I It is best to persuade people to give up this illusion, this attitude will only lead the dialogue to a dead end.

To be honest, my colleagues in Beijing have made a lot of preparations for this dialogue, including preparations on topics and preparations for epidemic prevention. My colleagues in Beijing have adopted the most comprehensive and strictest epidemic prevention measures, including vaccination. It should be said that a lot of efforts have been made to conduct various tests.

If someone thinks that China came to Alaska with sincerity this time to make compromises and concessions, then I would suggest that my colleagues in Beijing cancel this trip as soon as possible. Why bother to come here?

I hope the people concerned will lose this illusion.
